Having a class pet goes beyond just the cuteness factor and is an important part of the learning environment. The American Humane Association conducted a Pets in the Classroom Study. They found that classroom pets teach children compassion, empathy and respect for all living things, provide an avenue for relaxation when children are stressed, help students feel comfortable and engaged in the classroom and with their peers, and expose students to new experiences and opportunities. Additional benefits include opportunities to implement cross-curricular learning activities, encourage nurturing, build self-esteem, and teach responsibility.
